Cyclone Titli: 8 dead in Andhra Pradesh, one in Odisha; rain alert in parts of Jharkhand

The 'very severe' cyclonic storm 'Titli', which hit coastal areas of northern Andhra Pradesh, leaving eight people dead and several injured, now started intensifying in several parts of Jharkhand. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rainfall will continue in north-east districts of Jharkhand till Friday. The deadly storm, which uprooted trees and electric poles, damaging hutments in Odisha's Ganjam and Gajapati districts, claimed one life so far in the state. To our great relief, Cyclone 'Titli', which made the landfall with an estimated maximum sustained surface wind speed of 140-150 km per hour, now started coming down to 50-60 km/hour. The death-dealing cyclone is expected to prevail till Thursday evening and maybe for some time after night across Andhra Pradesh, officials at Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre said. Furthermore, Cyclone 'Titli' is likely to move north-westwards till Thursday evening and then recurve north-eastwards towards Gangetic West Bengal, weakening gradually into a deep depression by Friday morning, the weatherman added.

In the wake of this natural disaster, thirteen teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in vulnerable areas along with fire brigade personnel. Over three lakh people have been moved to safe places which helped avoid loss of life in the calamity. The evacuees are housed in 1,112 shelters where food and sanitation facilities are available.

One dead as Cyclone ‘Titli’ wreak havoc in Odisha's Gajapati and Ganjam districts.

With cyclone 'Titli' uprooting more than 100 electric poles and a large number of trees at many places, power supply and road communication are severely hit in Odisha’s Ganajm and Gajapati districts

The other places in Andhra's Srikakulam district recorded rainfall ranging from 2 cm to 13.26 cm

In Andhra Pradesh, the Palasa, Vajrapukottur, Nandigam areas recorded 28.02 cm of rainfall followed by Kotabommali (24.82 cm), Santabommali (24.42 cm), Itchapuram (23.76 cm) and Tekkali (23.46 cm).

In all, eight districts - Ganjam, Gajapati, Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore have been affected by "very severe cyclone Titli"

Altogether, 105 pregnant women in Ganjam district and 18 in Jagatsinghpur have been shifted to hospitals

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has instructed officials to expedite restoration efforts once the situation improves

As per the latest data, Balasore received very heavy rainfall of 117 mm while Paradip recorded 111 mm of rainfall

The water level of the Rusikulya and Bansadhara rivers are being monitored, Odisha water resources secretary PK Jena said

8 people have died in Srikakulam and Vijayanagaram districts due to Cyclone Titli. Power supply and communication systems are affected in both districts. Coastal villages are cut off from the mainland as the roads are damaged
