Cyclone Vayu, which advances towards the coastal region of Gujarat at the speed of up to 140-165 kmph, is expected to make landfall on Thursday. However, the latest bulletin, issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), states that the tropical cyclone has changed its course of direction and won't hit Gujarat, as predicted earlier. However, the system will still pass nearby from Veraval, Porbandar, Dwarka and may cause heavy rainfall, accompanied with gusty winds in the region. Meanwhile, fresh breeze has provided much-needed respite to Mumbaikars, bringing in rain and lower temperatures in the financial capital of India. The sea condition also turned turbulent off Maharashtra coast and northern parts of eastcentral Arabian Sea this morning. In view of this cyclonic formation coupled with high tide, the Maharashtra government has decided to shut off all beaches in the Konkan region for the next two days. Flight and train services are also partially suspended in both Gujarat and Maharashtra.

#9:10 pm: Airports Authority of India (AAI) said, “Normal flight operations to resume at Diu and Porbandar airports (Gujarat) from 10 am tomorrow.”

#9:00 pm: Airports Authority of India said that it reviewed the status of its airports in Gujarat in wake of #CycloneVayu. “Kandla and Keshod airports to resume normal flight operations from 12 midnight today. Normal flight operations will resume at Bhavnagar airport from 6 am tomorrow,” the AAI added.   

#8:00 pm: According to IMD bulletin #CycloneVayu which was going to hit Gujarat has moved towards Oman. But still for 24 hrs administration will be on high alert, schools of 10 districts will stay closed tomorrow, says Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani. 

#7:00 pm: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reviews the Navy’s preparedness along the Maharashtra and Gujarat coast in view of Cyclone Vayu.

#5:00 pm: Cyclone Vayu begins skirting Saurashtra coast, alert continues. 

#4:00 pm: Gujarat: NDRF rescued a pregnant woman requiring pre-term delivery from Shiyalbet village, where boats are the only mode of transportation and brought her to a hospital in Jafarabad. The woman successfully delivered a baby boy, condition of both the child and mother is stable.

 

#3:30 pm: Nine more trains cancelled and another four short terminated with partial cancellation as precautionary measure in view of the #CycloneVayu: Western Railway

#02:34 pm: PM Narendra Modi held telephonic conversation with Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on preparedness immediately after reaching Bishkek and assured allassistance and support from Central to mitigate the effects of Cyclone Vayu.

#02:37 pm: Power supply has been disrupted in nearly 560 villages of Gujarat due to cyclone Vayu and all efforts are on to restore it.

#02:31 pm: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reviewed the preparations of the Indian Coast Guard and Navy for tackling Cyclone Vayu, and is monitoring the situation.

#12:56 pm: Ministry of Earth Science — Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Vayu over Northeast and adjoining East central Arabian Sea, cyclone warning for Gujarat coast, orange message issued.

#11:56 am: Strong wind hits Gujarat's Valsad region, sea turns rough.

#11:45 am: Situation is normal at Surat, Bhuj, Keshod, Kandla, Jamnagar, Vadodara, Ahmedabad. Diu, Porbandar and Bhavnagar Airports that are currently witnessing a wind speed between 30-40 kmph gusting up to 60 kmph have been asked to closely monitor the situation and take note of Meteorological data.

#11:43 am: Review Status of Airports in Gujarat in the wake of Cyclone Vayu: Effect of Cyclone Vayu has been milder at most of the airports of Gujarat. No damage to any airport infrastructure or facilities has been reported so far.

#11:40 am: Pankaj Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary of Revenue: No casualties have been recorded due to Cyclone Vayu till now. The deaths (6 deaths in last 2 days) is not due the cyclone, rather it is due to monsoon.

#11:34 am: Famous sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik makes a sand art appealing everyone to stay safe and assist each other in this hour of need. "Please stay calm and Don't panic. Our thoughts and prayers with the people of Gujarat," he tweeted.

#11:29 am: As a precautionary measure, evacuation of people in coastal towns of Bhavnagar and Rajkot Divisions has been completed. WR ran 6 Evacuation Special trains in these Divisions. Rly machinery is alert and prepared in view of Cyclone Vayu: Western Railway tweeted.

#11:16 am: The railways has cancelled 77 trains and short terminated 33 others due to Cyclone Vayu, the Western Railways said on Thursday. The trains which were cancelled include Veraval-Amreli, Amreli-Junagadh and Delvada-Veraval among others.

#09:57 am: Pankaj Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary, Revenue Department, Gujarat Government: Government alertness for Cyclone Vayu continues with same intensity. Persons shifted to shelter homes to stay there. People should continue to stay in safe areas. Their preparedness to continue at same level.

#09:20 am: Gujarat: Six teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are on alert in Porbandar.

#09:17 am: Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Vayu to skit along Saurashtra Coast this afternoon with a wind speed 135-160 kmph. Coastal districts Diu, Gir Somnath, Junagarh, Porbandar, Dwarka will be affected: IMD scientist.

#09:05 am: IMD Mumbai on Cyclone Vayu: Extent of cyclone is over 900 km. So while eye of cyclone may or may not hit Porbandar, system will still hit. Accompanying risk factors such as wind and storm surge and rainfall, all 3 stay very much threat factors. Hence please don't relax in preparedness.

#08:54 am: Gir Somnath: Devotees visited Somnath Temple earlier this morning despite alert issued in view of Cyclone Vayu.

#08:45 am: Gujarat Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama on Somnath Temple remains open despite alert issued in view of  Cyclone Vayu: Temples can't be closed. We have requested tourists not to visit, but 'aarti' being performed since many years can't be stopped.

#08:42 am: Manorama Mohanty, scientist at India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ahmedabad: Cyclone Vayu won't hit Gujarat. It will pass nearby from Veraval, Porbandar, Dwarka. Its effect will be seen on the coastal regions as there will be heavy wind speed and heavy rain as well.

#08:07 am: Maharashtra: In view of Cyclone Vayu in Arabian Sea coupled with high tide on June 12 and 13, all beaches in Kokan region have been shut off to the public. 

#08:05 am: The Western Railway has cancelled trains going towards Kutch and Saurashtra region for two days while special trains have been kept ready for deployment in cyclone affected areas.

#08:03 am: As a precautionary measure, the Indian Railways has announced that all the trains have been either short-terminated or cancelled for two days, starting 6 pm Wednesday.

#08:01 am: Holiday has been declared in schools, colleges and 'anganwadis' on Wednesday and Thursday in ten district of the Gujarat.

#07:59 am: The Army has allotted 24 columns on standby and is ready to carry out any rescue and relief operations. Each column has a strength of about 70 people from infantry/artillery, signal, engineers and Army medical corps.

#07:56 am: 11 columns of Army, two companies of BSF, 14 companies of State Reserve Police and 300 commandos of state marine police have been deployed at different locations in Kutch and Saurashtra region.

#07:54 am: The Coast Guard, Army, Navy, Air Force and the Border Security Force have been put on high alert.

#07:50 am: The Airports Authority of India announced that flight operations will remain suspended at five airports in Gujarat for 24 hours from midnight Wednesday to minimise the damage to airport infrastructure and to avoid inconvenience to passengers due to the cyclone.

#07:45 am: Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Vayu over EC Arabian Sea moved NNW-wards in last 6 hours. It's 130 km Southwest of Veraval and 180 km South of Porbandar. It's likely to move NNW for some time and then NW-wards skirting Saurashtra coast with wind speed 135-145 kmph from this afternoon.

#07:27 am: Food packets being prepared by various groups in Rajkot, in the light of CycloneVayu. The food packets will be dispatched to the cyclone affected areas of the state, as per the instructions by the govt officials.
