A year after Mohammad Akhlaq was dragged and lynched by a mob in Uttar Pradesh’s Dadri over rumours that he kept beef at his home, his family now faces criminal charges.
A court has ordered registration of an FIR against Akhlaq’s family. The order comes after an elderly neighbour filed a petition, backed by those accused of killing Akhlaq, in village Bisada.
The petition alleges that a calf was killed by Akhlaq's family. It also said that his brother Jaan Mohammad was seen slitting the throat of the animal.
According to the villagers, Akhlaq and his son Danish were seen beating the calf on September 26, saying it was attacking people. The petition alleges that a villager later saw holding down the calf while his brother killed it.
