Once again the clashes have erupted between the Police and Gorkha JanMukti Morcha (GJM) ) who is a supporter of the GJM chief Bimal Gurung's faction in Darjeeling's Takvar.
Amidst the cross-firing one sub-inspector rank officer, Amitavo Mallick was shot dead and two casualties have also been reported as per the police reports. GJM has been demanding a separate Gorkha state, and an unrest that flared on June 8 has till now claimed the lives of 13 people.
The last death was on August 31 of a protester in a rally in Darjeeling. GJM is an ally of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
In addition to clashes with police, its members forced a 104-day shutdown in the hill region that crippled the local economy that relies heavily on the summer tourism.
Police have recovered 6 AK-47 rifles, 1 9mm pistol, ammunition, bombs & bomb-making material.
We have specific information that Bimal Gurung had instructed his cadres to attack police parties & police personnel and he also has some links with North-East insurgent groups and Maoists, said police officer Anuj Sharma.
