New Delhi:

In a shocking example of racism against people from North-East in the national capital, a woman was kicked out of Delhi Golf Club for wearing traditional attire. Tailin Lyngdoh, who was a guest of P Thimmayya Goel, a long-time member of the club, was asked to leave by authorities as her traditional Khasi dress Jenseim ‘looked like the attire of a maid’.

Lyngdoh works as a governess for Dr Nivedita Barthakur Sondhi, an honorary health advisor to the Assam government.

Soon after she reached the club, two members of the authority Sumita Thakur and Ajit Pal approached her and asked to leave as she looked like a maid or nanny. When they asked how they figured it, they said because she was dressed like one, Sondhi revealed on social media.

Sondhi also said that Lyngdoh is an extremely proud Khasi lady who has travelled the world in her Jenseim from London to UAE only to be kicked out of a club in her own country because people did not understand their own culture here.

Delhi Golf Club has refused the allegations that the guest was asked to leave. "Incident could have been handled in a better way by staff, the guests were not asked to leave," Delhi Golf Club told ANI.

"Explanation from the staff was sought and disciplinary action is in process. However, it is unfortunate that an undesirable attempt is being made to give the incident political and cultural overtones," Club authorities said.
