Delhi most unsafe for tourists; 1226 cases lodged against foreigners in India

New Delhi:

Delhi is the most unsafe place for foreigners in the country, while West Bengal witnessed highest number of crimes committed by them last year, according to a report released by National Crime Record Bureau on Thursday.

NCRB data reveals around 40 per cent of the crimes were reported against foreigners in 2016 in Delhi and 42 per cent of crimes were committed by them in West Bengal.

The report says, 12 foreigners were murdered, 19 women foreign nationals were raped and around 38 cases were reported under the section 'assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty'.

The NCRB breakdown reveals that total of 382 cases of crime against foreign nationals were reported in the country. Out of the total cases reported, 154 cases were lodged in the national capital, followed by 38 in Maharashtra, 33 in Puducherry and 22 in Goa.

The NCRB data also reveals that Jammu and Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Uttarakhand are safest for foreign visitors.

According to the NCRB report, total of 1226 cases were reported against foreign nationals in various police stations in India.

In West Bengal alone, 520 cases were reported against foreign nationals, followed by 91 in Karnataka,  80 in Goa, 64 in Tamil Nadu and 56 in Maharashtra. The data reveals that no crime cases were committed by foreigners in Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep, A&N Islands and D&N Haveli.

The data breakdown reveals that 66 foreigners were booked for cases related to narcotics, 59 in cheating cases, seven for murder and six on rape charges.
