A PhD scholar from Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) was arrested by the Delhi Police on Wednesday for allegedly raping a 26-year-old woman on the pretext of marriage. An FIR has been filed at Vasant Kunj Police Station against the accused Ajay Singh, a resident of Madhya Pradesh, as confirmed by the DCP, ANI reported. The case has been registered under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Ajay Singh, who is pursuing PhD at JNU, was arrested after the victim recorded her statement against him south Delhi's Vasant Kunj police station.
According to police, the accused was known to the victim since 2008. "The girl had come to Delhi in 2010 and they were in relationship since then. Despite repeated requests from the victim, Singh was not marrying her, hence she approached the police," the police officer said.
Last month, JNU had suspended another PhD scholar, who was accused of rape by a fellow student. A 28-year-old research student had alleged that a fellow student, Anmol Ratan, raped her after offering her a spiked drink in his hostel room in the university on August 20.
Ratan, an activist of the left-affiliated All India Students' Association (AISA), was also expelled from the student outfit and police have booked him.
