New Delhi:

West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Dilip Ghosh on Sunday came out in support of party MLA Akash Vijayvargiya, who was arrested four days ago for assaulting a civic official with a cricket bat in Indore. However, Vijayvargiya was released from a local jail on bail this morning. Defending Vijayvargiya for the infamous "cricket bat" incident, Ghosh said he is a young leader and seems to have done this in josh or was miffed with the behaviour of the local workers in the region.

"He is a young leader. He seems to have done this in 'Josh' or may be a reaction to the behaviour of the local workers there," Dilip Ghosh told India Today, adding that Vijayvargiya could have shown some resistance and self-control as the matter has become a matter of debate and discussion.

Akash Vijayvargiya, a first-time MLA from Indore-3 Assembly segment, was caught on TV cameras assaulting municipal officer Dhirendra Singh Bais in full public view with a cricket bat last Wednesday while opposing demolition of a dilapidated house.

While a magistrate's court sent Vijayvargiya in judicial custody till July 11, he was released following a bail order from a Bhopal court on Saturday. The young BJP leader was asked to furnish a personal bail bond of Rs 50,000 in the assault case and of Rs 20,000 in the protest without permission case.

Akash, son of West Bengal BJP in charge Kailash Vijayvargiya, however, has justified his action, saying "This is just a beginning. We will finish corruption and hooliganism (of civic officials). Avedan (application), nivedan (request), then dana-dan (thrashing)....this is our line of action".

Walking out of prison on Sunday morning, the BJP legislator told media, "I hope I would not get another chance to behave in such a matter. In a situation, when a woman was being dragged in front of police, I couldn't think of doing anything else".
