Divorced via speed post, woman files petition in Supreme Court

Things went bizarre for Afreen Rehman, 25, after she received divorce paper from husband via mail and not just via regular mail but through 'Speed Post'.

After getting shocked at initial stage, she on Wednesday decided to move Supreme Court against Islam's 'triple talaq' provision.

Talaq-e-bidat is a practice by which a Muslim man can divorce his his wife by saying 'talaq' more than once any time in the duration between his wife's periods. He can also get divorce instantaneously by repeating the word 'talaq' three times, a practice called unilateral triple-talaq.

Rehman alleged that she was getting tortured by her in-laws for dowery. She also alleged mental-harrasment with physical assault.

After she decided to move back to her maternal home, this speed post has worsened things up. Now, Rehman has knocked Supreme Court’s door and has urged an intervention in the matter.

The All India Muslim Women Personal Law Board president Shaista Ambar has been demanding the abolition of triple talaq.
