The Congress attacked US President Donald Trump for his message in the visitors’ book of the iconic Sabarmati Ashram during his maiden state visit in that began with arrival at the Ahmedabad Airport earlier in the day. In the visitors’ book, Trump had written- “To my great friend Prime Minister Modi- Thank you for this wonderful visit.” Senior Congress leader and former minister Manish Tewari attacked Trump. The Congress leader took to Twitter and posted, “This is a snapshot of the note that someone sent. It ostensibly is @realDonaldTrump’s note at Sabarmati. No mention of the Great Mahatma. Does he even know who Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was?” Namaste Trump LIVE UPDATES 

Giving out details of Trump’s visit to the place, Sabarmati Ashram Trustee Kartikeya Sarabhai said: “US President was happy to visit the Ashram. While leaving he said that it was a very peaceful experience and appreciated the simple living style of Gandhi ji.” He also told media about the presents gifted to the US President and the First Lady. “Several gifts, including Mahatma Gandhi ji's biography, a Charkha (spinning wheel) and a marble statue of 3 monkeys symbolising ‘See No Evil, Speak No Evil & Hear No Evil’ have been gifted to him,” Sarabhai added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who reached the Ashram a few minutes earlier, showed Trump and the US First Lady 'Hriday Kunj', a room inside the Ashram where Gandhiji and his wife Kasturba lived. Modi explained the importance of this place in India's freedom struggle. During the visit, Trump and Melania also tried their hands on the khadi spinning wheel, also known as charkha. Melania also helped Trump in weaving khadi on charkha. The Trumps were in the Ashram for around 15 minutes.

Over 10,000 police personnel, besides officials of the United States Secret Service, and personnel of the National Security Guards (NSG) and the Special Protection Group (SPG) have been deployed for the high profile visit.  Bollywood singer Kailash Kher and some Gujarati folk singers will perform at the stadium, officials of the Gujarat Cricket Association said. Students of various government and private schools have also been roped in to perform at cultural events and they have been practicing for days, an official said.
