US President Donald Trump, on board the special Air Force One aircraft along with his delegation landed in India on Monday. Donald Trump is accompanied by First Lady Melania, daughter Ivanka, son-in-law Jared Kushner and the top brass of his administration. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was at the Sardar Valabbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad to welcome the US President. Donald Trump is the fourth consecutive American president to visit India and the second only US President to travel to India in the first term.

Before Trump, former US President Barack Obama who visited India twice was the first US president to do so in 2010.

A look back at all US presidents who have visited India:

  1. Dwight D Eisenhower: He was the first U.S. president to visit independent India. Eisenhower’s launched the bilateral relationship at an important period between the US and India.
  2. Richard Nixon: He was the second US president to travel to India in 1969 from July 31 to August 1.
  3. Jimmy Carter: He was the third US president to visit India in January 1978. Carter served the United States between 1977 to 1981. Carter sought to ease tensions between the two countries that escalated due to India’s nuclear weapons tests.
  4. Bill Clinton: The fourth US president to travel to India in March 2000. Clinton is credited for forcing Pakistan to withdraw troops during Kargil war in 1999.
  5. George W Bush: The fifth US president to travel to India in 2006. The high spot of Bush’s trip was the finalization of a landmark nuclear deal.
  6. Barack Obama: The sixth US president to travel to India and the only one to visit twice, in 2010 and 2015. Obama’s first visit was during former PM Manmohan Singh’s tenure. In addition to US Dollar billion in trade deals, he backed India’s bid for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council.
