Heavy thunder roared and darkness loomed over the capital as high-velocity dust storm accompanied with gusty winds swept Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday evening yet again. The sudden change in weather brought the mercury level a few notches down in Delhi and nearby Noida and Gurugram.
The maximum temperature settled at 41.8 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season's average, while the minimum settled at 26.1 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year, said a MeT department official.
"The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover at 42 and 28 degrees Celsius, respectively tomorrow," the weatherman said.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said a spell of light rain and thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds at a speed of 50-70 km per hour will hit the city and the NCR region within three hours. The humidity oscillated between 60 and 17 per cent.
The MeT has also forecast cloudy skies along with the likelihood of light rain and thundershowers accompanied with squall towards the evening and night. On Wednesday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 40.2 degrees and 25 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Earlier on May 12, massive storm with a wind speed of 120 km per hour hit the city and uprooted several trees and electricity poles, dipped the visibility and brought traffic to a standstill. While pedestrians rushed to seek shelter, commuters complained of delay in Metro services. The hailstorm disrupted electric supply in parts of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
The weatherman also warned that thunderstorm and squall are "very likely" to hit some areas of eastern Uttar Pradesh on Friday.
The meteorological office said the districts that could be affected are Siddharthnagar, Kushinagar and Maharajganj. It said rain and thunderstorm are very likely at isolated places over east Uttar Pradesh and the weather is likely to remain dry over western part of the state.
Several parts of the state were hit by severe storm last week, leaving 18 dead and 27 others injured. Last Wednesday, five people died in Etawah district, three each in Mathura, Aligarh and Agra, two in Firozabad and one each in Hathras and Kanpur Dehat.
On May 2-3, heavy storm claimed the lives of 134 people and injured over 400 in five states. Uttar Pradesh was the worst hit, accounting for 80 deaths, most of them in Agra district in western part.
