Eastern Peripheral Expressway: India's first smart, green highway

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, India’s first smart and green highway, which is the first phase of Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE).

The 135-km Eastern Peripheral Expressway was built at a cost of whopping Rs 11,000 crore. The highway, which was completed in a record 500 days would showcase 36 national monuments and 40 fountains.

The expressway is India's first smart and green highway with several unique features. It will be lit by solar power and will have rainwater harvesting system on every 500 metres on both sides.

The expressway will be signal-free and connect Ghaziabad, Greater Noida, Faridabad and Palwal. The Delhi-Meerut Expressway will decongest traffic on Delhi's roads as about two lakh vehicles, including trucks, will play on it without entering the national capital.

Equipped with smart and intelligent Highway Traffic Management System (HTMS) and Video Incident Detection System (VIDS), the 14-lane expressway has world-class safety features and smart infrastructure.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Minister released a short video film, giving details about the expressway, which is expected to reduce the travel time between Delhi and Meerut to 45 minutes. Take a look at the video:
