One terrorist has been gunned down and an Army Major succumbed to his injuries in an encounter that broke out in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district early Monday morning. Another officer and two more jawans belonging to the 19 Rashtriya Rifles, who recieved injuries during the gunfight, are undergoing medical treatment. The area has been cordoned off in the view of ongoing encounter between the ultras and forces. The exchange of fire was underway when the last reports came in.
"Jammu and Kashmir: Army Major injured in an encounter between security forces and terrorists in Anantnag has succumbed to his injuries. The injured soldier is undergoing treatment," the news agency ANI reported.
Speaking to the media, Jammu and Kashmir DGP Dilbag Singh said, "The encounter is still on. We will be able to give you more information once the encounter is over".

Early in the day, security forces launched a cordon and search operation, acting on credible inputs about the presence of terrorists at Achabal area of Anantnag in south Kashmir. The search operation turned into a gun battle after the ultras open fired on the forces, who retaliated.
