The country will get its 14th President when the results will be announced at 5 pm on July 20. NDA’s candidate Ram Nath Kovind and UPA’s candidate Meira Kumar are vying for the top constitutional post.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan has a glorious past, and it is imperative for everyone to know about the residence of the President. The structure was built in the year 1929 and it took eight years to build and cost about Rs 14 million.

 Lord Irwin was the first occupant of Rashtrapati Bhawan

The structure was designed for the first Viceroy of India. Lord Irwin was the first Viceroy who moved in 1929 in the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Rashtrapati Bhawan has 340 rooms

The Rashtrapati Bhavan is spread over 330 acres and it has 340 rooms out of which 63 are living rooms, 227 columns, 35 loggias and 37 fountains.  Apart from this, there are three main entries to the Forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan which is divided in President's and Cabinet Secretariats.

Sir Edwin Lutyens was the chief Architect

As per information at the website of President of India, the structure was designed by the British Architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens.

Around 70 crore bricks were used in construction

Around 70 crore brick was used in the construction of the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

When it was known as Rashtrapati Bhavan

It was known as Rashtrapati Bhawan when the nation’s first president Dr Rajendra Prasad started living in the abode on January 26, 1950.

Dr Rajendra Prasad had received 11,000 gifts from across the world. These gifts have been kept in a place called Tosh Khana within Rashtrapati Bhavan.
