External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday re-tweeted a poll carried out by Congress which assessed her “failure” as a Foreign Minister over handling the case of the 39 missing Indians who were killed in Mosul in Iraq.

However, the poll answers had a majority of ‘No’ than ‘Yes’. About 76 per cent of people answered ‘No’ to the poll, while only 24 per cent people said ‘Yes’. A total of 33,879 people had voted on the poll put up by Congress.

The poll questioned, “Do you think the death of 39 Indians in Iraq is Sushma Swaraj’s biggest failure as Foreign Minister? #IndiaSpeaks”

On March 20, Swaraj announced in Rajya Sabha that the 39 Indians who were abducted by the Islamic State in 2014 were killed and their body was recovered from a mound in Iraq’s Badush area. She added that the mortal remains of all the 39 recovered bodies had been sent to Baghdad for verification and will be later brought back to India.

Since then, the Congress had been criticising Swaraj for misleading the families of the Indians killed by giving them false hopes. The party also decided to push a motion for breach of privilege.

Congress’ Shashi Tharoor questioned Swaraj saying “Why did the Govt give false hope to the nation for three and a half years that the people were still alive? That was disappointing behaviour.”

Congress President Rahul Gandhi condoled the deaths of the 39 Indians and tweeted, “Shocked to hear that 39 Indians who were in captivity since 2014, in Iraq, are now confirmed dead. My deepest condolences to the families of those who have lived in hope, that their loved ones will return unharmed. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you today.”

The victims, most of them who hailed from Punjab, were working on projects near Mosul at the time when the IS abducted them. A total of 40 people were abducted, one of whom ran away from the clutches by posing as a Bangladeshi Muslim.
