Fire breaks out in a coach of Darbhanga-New Delhi Bihar Sampark Kranti Superfast Express. According to reports, the incident took place around 10 pm. All the passengers have been rescued and operations are underway to douse the fire.
Some reports suggest that the sleeper coach of Sampark Kranti caught fire while performing shunting. The coach - S6 - was occupied by passengers when the incident took place.
No causalities have been reported.
Meanwhile, twenty-three people were killed and 27 injured in a blast at a firecracker factory located in a residential area of Gurdaspur in Punjab on Wednesday, officials said. Several people were feared trapped under the debris of the factory building in this town in Gurdaspur district and rescue workers were looking for survivors till late in the evening.
The explosion also damaged buildings nearby, shattering windowpanes and even bringing down the roofs of a couple of them. The explosion was heard kilometres away, local residents said.
The blast took place around 4 pm at the factory in a residential area, Inspector General (Border Range) SPS Parmar told PTI.
President Ram Nath Kovind expressed grief. "Saddened to learn about the loss of lives due to an explosion at a firecracker factory in Batala, Punjab," he tweeted. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi too offered condolences.
An ex-gratia relief of Rs 2 lakh each has been announced for relatives of those killed.
The Punjab government said the seven severely injured referred to the Amritsar medical college will get Rs 50,000 each. Those with minor injuries will get Rs 25,000 each.
Amarinder Singh directed both the civil and police administration to extend all possible help to the victims' families.
Punjab Jails Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa also took stock of the situation along with senior administration and police officers.
