First special water train reaches drought-hit Latur

Latur, a town located the Marathwada region of Maharashtra is battling the worst drought ever. A  special train carrying around five lakh litres water reached here this morning.

The special water train with 10 wagons carrying water for Latur on Monday had left from Miraj in western Maharashtra. Seeing the worst drought conditions in Latur and nearby areas, the Maharashtra government in collaboration with Indian Railways decided to press into service water trains, the first of which just arrived this morning.

There are 10 tankers in the water train carrying 50,0000 litres water each. The tankers were filled up at Miraj in Sangli district of western Mahasrashtra, 300 kms away.

For proper storage and distribution of the precious beverage Latur administration has acquired a huge well, located about 5-7 km from Latur, to store the water. The second train consisting of 50 wagons is expected to be ready for water loading around April 15, reportedly.
