Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has passed away on August 13, 2018

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee passed away at Belle Vue Hospital in Kolkata on Monday morning, hospital sources said. He was 89.

Chatterjee suffered from prolonged kidney ailment and multiple organ failure. He passed away at around 8.15 am after his condition deteriorated following a “mild heart attack” on Sunday, the sources said.

The former Lok Sabha speaker was admitted to the Belle Vue Hospital, after his health condition became critical on Tuesday. His condition deteriorated on Sunday and he was put on a ventilator support.

Condolences and tributes poured in from loved ones and well wishers, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and Congress party president Rahul Gandhi, as the news of his demise was announced.

"Anguished by his demise. My thoughts are with his family and supporters," Modi tweeted.

Chatterjee was a 10-time Lok Sabha MP. He was the Speaker of Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009 under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

One of the longest-serving parliamentarians, Chatterjee was expelled from the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in 2008 after he refused to resign as the speaker of the Lower House as the party withdrew its support over the Indo-US nuclear deal. He was a member of the Lok Sabha from 1971 to 2009. Chatterjee was also an illustrious jurist.

Chatterjee is survived by his wife and two daughters.
