Former Maldives vice president Ahmed Adeeb, facing terror charges, arrested in Tamil Nadu

Former Maldives vice president Ahmed Adeeb, facing terror charges, arrested in Tamil Nadu

Former Maldives vice president Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor was reportedly arrested from Tuticorin port for iilegally entering the country on Thursday. The former Maldives vice president had reached India via sea route and was questioend by centeral agencies off the Tuticorin coast.

According to new agency PTI, citing a top district police official, Ghafoor was not allowed to deboard the vessel he used to enter the country since there was no information about him coming to India.

District police has no information to ascertain if his visit has the sanction of competent authorities and the vessel was permitted to berth and there were nine crew members, the police official said. A top state police official decliend to eleborate the situation but said that Adheeb was not allowed to "set his foot on Indian soil."

The former Maldives vice president is facing multiple cases of terror and money laundering back home. Reacting to Adheeb's illegal entry in the country, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said they were trying to ascertain the veracity of the reports.

 “We are trying to ascertain the veracity of the reports. We will contact their government and find out if these reports are true,” Kumar said.
