Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his wishes to former Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh on his 89th birthday. Taking to Twitter, PM Modi said, “Best wishes to our former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji on his birthday. I pray for his long and healthy life.” Dr Singh, a renowned economist, served as the 13th Prime Minister of India between 2004 to 2014. Dr Singh went on to serve India as crucial financial positions.

Manmohan Singh was born on September 26, 1932, in Gah (now in Pakistan) to Gurmukh Singh and Amrit Kaur. His family migrated to India during the partition of the country in 1947.

He completed his Economics honours at the University of Cambridge in 1957 and in 1960, Manmohan Singh went to the University of Oxford for the D.Phil.

Manmohan Singh is credited for his financial expertise and his policies while recession loomed over when he was finance minister in 1991. He brought a policy commonly known as “LPG – Liberalisation, Privatisation and Globalisation” with a motive to strengthen the Indian economy. It resulted in the opening of Indian markets for foreign investors.

Dr Singh was named as the Prime Ministerial candidate by Sonia Gandhi after the Congress-led United Progress Alliance (UPA) won the 2004 Lok Sabha Elections.
