Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday paid homage to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on his 147th birth anniversary at his memorial Raj Ghat in New Delhi.Â
Several senior leaders including Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kjriwal also paid the homage.Â
The leader including Prime Minister also visited the memorial of Indiaâ€™s second prime minister and statesman Lal Bahadur Shastri, who was also born on the same day. Â
Nation is celebrating the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on Sunday. Celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti, Bapuâ€™s birth anniversary is a national festival in India.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, renowned for his principles of truth and non-violence, led India to independence in 1947.Â
Gandhiâ€™s principles had a wide impact all over the globe and even the United Nations adopted a resolution on 15 June 2007 declaring 2nd October as International Day of Non-Violence.
October 2 is also the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. Shastri, the second Prime Minister of the country after Jawaharlal Nehru is remembered for his simple lifestyle. However, he is highly remembered for his win over Pakistan in the 1965 Indo-Pak war.
Senior parliamentarians later also remembered both Bapu and former PM Lal Bahdur Shastri during a special ceremony organised in Parliament House.Â
