Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the Indian nationalist leader, commonly known as Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar of Gujarat. Gandhi is remembered as a major figure in the Indian Independence struggle who also raised his voice against apartheid and violence.
For India’s Independence from the British rulers, Gandhi led several peaceful strikes, took out steadfast non-violent protests. Gandhi, a pacifist, led the Indian National Congress in 1921, reorganized the party’s constitution around the principle of Swaraj (complete political Independence from the British).
Mahatma Gandhi led mass civil disobedience movement for country’s Independence which led to his arrest on 10th March 1922, and trial on sedition charges, for which he served 2 years, of a 6-year prison sentence.
Gandhi’s life and teachings have inspired many people globally and his birthday October 2nd is celebrated as a national holiday with great pride every year.
