People in large numbers on Friday paid tribute to the the Gorkha Janmukti (GJM) leader and councillor of Kalimpong Barun Bhujel who had allegedly died in police custody.

Hundreds of Gorkhaland supporters were on streets to mark protest of their leader’s alleged death in police custody. They were seen carrying black flags or tied black ribbons on their head or arms as sign of protest.

According to reports, Gorkhaland supporters across the Darjeeling hill area took out processions to pay tribute to Bhujel and mark protest.

Bhujel was arrested on June 16 in connection with violence in Darjeeling Hill region during the 104-day long strike demanding a separate state of Gorkhaland. The deceased GJM leader was considered close to Gurung, who is currently absconding.

GJM chief Bimal Gurung, purported a audio message, blaming “police torture” and called for protests in the Hills, responding to which the Gorkha Yuva Morcha, youth wing of GJM. A day long strike was called on Thursday.

Bhujel’s family too have alleged that he was not given treatment on time which led to his death.

Doctors of the hospital said Bhujel had chronic liver problem and pancreatitis which led to his death.
