Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has pancreatic cancer: State health minister

Amid relentless demands from the Opposition on Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s health update, state Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Saturday said that he was suffering from pancreatic cancer.

Rane’s statement came after both the Centre as well as the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit dodged questions about the chief minister’s health even as the Opposition Congress kept demanding Parrikar’s resignation amid his deteriorating health.

“He is the CM of Goa and the fact is that he is not well. He has got pancreatic cancer. There is no hiding of this fact,” Rane told reporters in Panaji, a day after the Congress gave the BJP-led coalition government four days to prove that Parrikar was of “sound health and mind” and in a position to govern the state, according to a report in NDTV.

“Let him be peaceful with his family. That much right he has, after serving the people of Goa, that if he wants to spend some quality time with his family, nobody has the business to ask...,” Rane was quoted as saying.

On October 14, Parrikar returned to Goa from Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He has, however, not made any public appearance since his return and is currently bedridden at his private residence, which party sources said has been converted into a sophisticated medical facility, with doctors and para-medical staff on 24-hour duty.

The Goa chief minister has been in and out of hospitals in Goa, Mumbai, New York and Delhi for the past seven months now because of his prolonged illness. This had led the Opposition Congress to demand his resignation.
