Five Indian nationals were on Wednesday arrested for being in possession of over 3 kg of smuggled gold, worth whopping Rs 14.7 million, at the international airport here, police said.
The accused had concealed the gold in their suitcases’ wheels. “This was an innovative idea to smuggle the gold... It has been seen for the first time,” said Superintendent of Nepal Police Dinesh Raj Mainali.
The security unit at the Tribhuvan International Airport has arrested five Indian nationals with 3.36 kilograms of smuggled gold on Tuesday.
Ishwar Das, Avatar Singh, Amrit Pal Singh, Harmindar Singh and Rijwan Ansari were arrested after they landed at Tribhuvan International Airport via Thai Airways flight from Bangkok, Thailand, according to the police.
They had distributed the yellow metal among themselves and concealed it in their suitcases, said Mainali.
As per market price, the gold is worth Rs 14.7 million. All the arrestees have been handed over to the customs office for further investigation.
