Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Friday criticised the GST council meet by saying that they will not allow Bhartiya Janata Party to impose ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’ on India. He urged them to give India a ‘Genuine Simple Tax.’
Rahul added that they cannot break the back of the small and medium businesses, crush the informal sector and destroy millions of jobs.
Congress vice president gave three suggestions to them. Rahul urged them to correct the fundamental flaw in GST architecture to give India a Genuine Simple Tax.
Rahul asked BJP to not waste India’s time with lip service.
"Acknowledge your incompetence, shed your arrogance and listen to the people of India," said Rahul.
Earlier in the day, the GST Council decided to reduce tax rate on a wide range of mass use items - from chewing gums to detergents -- to 18 per cent from current 28 per cent.
The council pruned the list of items attracting the top 28 per cent tax rate to just 50 from 227 previously.
The Goods and Services Tax (GST), implemented "from July 1, had five tax slabs of 0 per cent, 5 per cent, 12 per cent, 18 per cent and 28 per cent.
There were 227 items in the 28 per cent slab. The fitment committee had recommended that it should be pruned to 62 items. But the GST Council has further pruned 12 more items.
