The Gujarat government on Tuesday issued notification to ban the controversial blue whale game in the state. The notification came hours after Chief Minister Vijay Rupani’s statement that the government is mulling to ban the controversial game.

The state government said that it took the decision to safeguard youth from the blue whale game. It said that there were several cases where youths committed suicide because of the game.

"Instructions have been issued to all schools and principals asking them to keep a vigil to ensure that children and youngsters do not fall prey to Blue Whale Challenge. They have been asked to create awareness about its effects on youngsters," the state government said.

Earlier, the Tamil Nadu government today issued an advisory on the online game Blue Whale Challenge, asking parents and teachers to keep a close eye on the behaviour of children.

The Home Department advisory, made in the wake of the suicide of a 19 year-old boy in Madurai who played the game, also warned internet users from sharing links, as it was “illegal” to do so and that they “will be punished as per law.”

Citing available information, it said children in the age group of 12-19 years “are the most vulnerable group over the internet to be most prone to Blue Whale Challenge and similar games.”
