In view of Guru Purnima, Parliament declares holiday tomorrow

New Delhi:

In view of Hindu festival Guru Purnima 2018, Parliament will not hold session on Friday. The Upper House (Rajya Sabha) and the Lower House (Lok Sabha) will now assemble on Monday.

The holiday on account of Guru Purnima was declared by Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu in the Rajya Sabha and by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan in the Lok Sabha.

“Taking the sense of the House, the Lok Sabha would not have its session on Friday in view of Guru Purnima,” the Speaker announced.

Similarly, in the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Naidu announced the Guru Purnima holiday, saying, “We have just got a message from Lok Sabha that it would not be in session on Friday on account of Guru Purnima.”

What is Guru Purnima?

Guru Purnima is celebrated by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains alike in India and Nepal to honour their chosen spiritual teachers and express gratitude towards them for enlightening their life.

The festival is celebrated with full fervour on the day of fool moon or Purnima in the Hindu month of Ashadha (June-July). On this day, celebrations are marked by spiritualistic activities known as ‘Guru Pooja’ in honour of the Guru.
