Gurugram: Judge's wife shot by guard dead, son still critical

The wife of an additional sessions judge, who was shot by his bodyguard near Arcadia market in Gurugram’s Sector-49 on Saturday afternoon, succumbed to her injuries on Sunday morning at the Medanta Hospital, reported news agency ANI. Their son Dhruv is still said to be critical and is undergoing treatment. The gunman has been sent to a four-day police remand.

The police are yet to ascertain the exact cause of the incident. DCP-East Sulochna Gajraj said, "We will seek his (accused gunman) remand and question him further. It is still not clear why he shot wife and son of additional sessions judge yesterday (Saturday), investigation is underway."

According to the police, the incident took place around 3:30 pm near Arcadia market where Ritu, 38, and Dhruv, 18, had gone for shopping.A video tweeted by news agency ANI shows the gunman, identified as Mahipal Singh, tries to drag Dhruv, who was lying unconscious, inside a car. But when he couldn't, Singh left him on the road and drove away in the car in which they had come to the market.

According to reports, Singh even called the judge on his way to inform him that he had shot the latter’s wife and son.Mahipal then reached a police station where he fired again and escaped from there. He was arrested from Faridabad a little while later. DCP Gurgaon (East) said both of them have been admitted to a hospital and are being treated.

"Some locals informed the police about gunshots being fired outside the Arcadia market. When a police team reached the spot, they found Ritu and Dhruv lying in a pool of blood," the DCP-East had told news agency PTI.

It is yet to be known what prompted Mahipal to take this step. However, initial probes suggest that he was suffering from depression and was not happy with  "misbehaviour" of the judge's family. Ritu had suffered a bullet injury in her chest, while Dhruv in his head.
