I asked for freedom, the fact is I am still not free: Hadiya

Hadiya says she is still not free, allow me to talk to people I like

A day after Supreme Court sent her back to her Salem college to pursue her medical degree, Kerela woman Hadiya nee Akhila Ashokan said she pleaded for freedom before the court but hasn’t got yet.

She said she wanted to meet her husband, Shafin Jahan. When asked wasn’t she free to meet her husband after the Supreme Court order, she gave a disgruntled reply. “Though I asked for freedom but the truth is I am still not free,” said Hadiya.

On November 27, the Supreme Court had already sent her Salem in Tamil Nadu to enable her pursue homoeopathic studies.

Hadiya nee Akhila Asokan had converted to Islam before marrying Shafin Jahan. Her parents had alleged their daughter was forcibly converted into another faith. Hadiya’s parents demanded their daughter stayed only with them. But the Supreme Court ruled Hadiya would go back to her college to pursue her course in homeopathy.

While talking to reporters, Hadiya said she is only demanding her basic rights as an ordinary citizen. It has nothing to do with politics or caste, she added.

The apex court had appointed the dean of the Salem-based homoeopathic college as Hadiya's guardian and granted him liberty to approach it in case of any problem.

As the day wore on the principal of the college is reported to have said that Hadiya was free to meet anyone she chose to including her husband.
