Hapur man gets Rs 128 crore electricity bill for mere 2 KiloWatt connection

New Delhi:

In a case of shocking negligence of Power Department in Uttar Pradesh, an elderly resident of Hapur district has been charged an exorbitant electricity bill of more than Rs.128 crore. Moreover, the electricity has cut off supply to his home after he allegedly failed to pay the bill.

Shamim, a septuagenarian, stays with his wife in Chamri village in Hapur. He claimed that the Power Department told him that electricity will be reconnected only after clear the dues. 

He has an electricity connection of 2 KiloWatt and the amount printed on the bill, is Rs 128, 45, 95,444.

"No one listens to our pleas, how will we submit that amount? When we went to complain about it, we were told that they will not resume our electricity supply unless we pay the bill," he said.

Shamim said that he usually paid around Rs 700 and Rs 800 as his monthly electricity bill.

"But this time, the Electricity Department has given me the bill of the entire city," he said.

Senior officials of the Power Department in Lucknow said that they were not aware of the matter and hence, could not comment. When told about the matter, they said it could be a technical glitch and would be rectified.
