New Delhi:

The Assembly by-election in Haryana’s Jind constituency turned into a battle of heavyweights as Jannayak Janata Party, which was launched last month after a split in the main opposition party INLD, fielded Digvijay Chautala against Congress strongman Randeep Singh Surjewala. “After consulting all the members of the organization, the JJP has decided to field Digvijay Singh Chautala for the Jind bypoll,” Hisar MP Dushyant Chautala told reporters.

Digvijay is the younger brother of Dushyant and son of Ajay Singh Chautala. After the rift with his father and former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala Ajay Singh had launched a new party the Jannayak Janta Party.

Announcing Digvijay’s candidature, Dushyant said that the result of the bypoll will depict the political picture of the state and expressed confidence of his brother’s victory.

“This bypoll is not limited to Jind only. It will depict the whole (political) picture of the state. Digvijay is a youth leader and the party will benefit from it. People will support youth in this bypoll. We have nominated the youngest candidate,” he said.

While the BJP has fielded Krishan Middha, for the January 28 bypoll which was necessitated after the death of his father and INLD MLA Hari Chand Middha, the Congress had decided to go with its chief spokesperson and Rahul Gandhi's loyalist Randeep Singh Surjewala.

“We needed a good candidate and he is one of the best. With his victory, we are going to set the tone for the Lok Sabha and assembly elections,” state Congress president Ashok Tanwar said while announcing Surjewala's name.
