As the Congress continues its search for a new party chief, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has proposed the idea of ‘young blood’ for the leadership role. Taking to Twitter, Singh described Gandhi’s resignation as an ‘unfortunate incident.’ He stressed on ‘young India’ to galvanise the Grand Old Party of India. “After unfortunate decision of @RahulGandhi to quit, hope to see another dynamic youth leader as @INCIndia president to galvanise party. Urge CWC to take note of young India’s need for a young leader, aligned to aspirations of its large youth population & with grassroots connect,” Singh said on Twitter.

Though there have been no official reports form the party high command, there’s a strong buzz that the Congress is likely to finalise between Sushil Kumar Shinde or Motilal Vora to head the party. After days of speculations, Rahul Gandhi formally announced his resignation as the Congress chief. In a four-page letter, Gandhi spoke about ‘accountability’ and moments when he fought ‘all alone’.

Taking moral responsibility of the party’s poor performance in the recently concluded Lok Sabha Elections, Gandhi resigned form top post and said that ‘accountability is critical for the future growth of our party’.

"As President of the Congress party, I am responsible for the loss of the 2019 election. Accountability is critical for the future growth of our party," he said in a letter that was put on his Twitter account.

"It is for this reason that I have resigned as Congress President."

"Rebuilding the party requires hard decisions and numerous people will have to be made accountable for the failure of 2019. It would be unjust to hold others accountable but ignore my own responsibility as President of the party," the letter reads.

Gandhi had said that while it was important for someone new to lead the Congress, "it would not be correct for me to select that person".

The grand old party won 52 seats in the Lok Sabha election. Two days after the results of Lok Sabha Elections 2019 were announced, Gandhi had resigned from the post. The CWC rejected his resignation and authorised him to initiate changes in the party in order to revamp and restructure it at all levels.
