A major untoward incident has been thwarted by joint security forces in Mumbai by unearthing huge cache of explosive materials from the metro city’s Thane area on Monday.

Security forces have recovered huge cache of Ammonium Nitrate and have arrested three people in connection to the recovery.

Security forces believe that terrorists were planning a major attack before or during Independence Day.

A senior police official part of the raiding team not authorised to talk to the media said that the raids were made on specific intelligence inputs.

The official further added that Mumbai Crime Branch, Railway Police and Maharashtra Anti-terrorist Squad (ATS) was part of the raiding team.

According to sources, the raids were conducted after surveillance and intelligence input was received by the Crime Branch, Railway Police and the Maharashtra ATS. The police have seized ammonium nitrate and nine detonators in the raids.

The officer further added that Ammonium Nitrate is used to make improvised explosive devices (IED) and the bomb-making explosive material is usually used by terrorists and Maoists to make bombs.
