IED blast hits army vehicle in Assam's Tinsukia (Pic: ANI)

A powerful blast by suspected ULFA militants hit an army vehicle in Digboi in Tinsukia district of Assam leaving three soldiers dead and three injured, an official said on Saturday. The incident took place in Pengeri area at around 5:30 am, Defence public relations officer Lt. Col. Suneet Newton said.

"They (the militants) had planted an improvised explosive device (IED) on the road. When the IED exploded, the convoy stopped. Then the militants fired indiscriminately," Newton said. The injured soldiers were taken to a hospital where one of them died, he said.

The encounter was underway between the security forces and suspected militants in Tinsukia district.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has condemned the attack saying, "I strongly condemn this attack, the perpetrators will be punished. Have directed officials to go to Tinsukia."

Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Assam CM in the wake of Tinsukia blast.

"Deeply anguished to learn of the death of Army soldiers in a blast in Tinsukia. I pray for the speedy recovery of our injured soldiers. Spoke to Assam CM who apprised me of the situation in the wake of blast in Tinsukia. MHA is closely monitoring the situation," Rajnath said.
