In 17 days, Delhi loses two former chief ministers -Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit

Former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj passed away on Tuesday night. She was 67. The senior BJP leader was brought to AIIMS at 10:15 PM. The BJP stalwart had a kidney transplant in 2016. She did not contest Lok Sabha polls 2019 earlier this year due to health reasons.

It is the second major loss for the nation as well as for the people New Delhi. The city witnessed death of second former chief minister within 17 days. On July 20, 2019, Congress senior leader and ex-Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit died at the age of 81. Co-incidentally, both the woman politicians suffered massive cardiac arrest.

Swaraj was the first female Chief Minister of Delhi. However, her tenure was very short- from October 13, 1998 to December 3, 1998. Dikshit succeeded Swaraj as the next Chief Minister of Delhi. Both the leaders were prominent women politicians of their respective political party-Congress and BJP.

Despite having contrarian views, both the leaders had very amiable relationship. Swaraj and Dikshit both used to admire each other publicly. When Dikshit passed away, Swaraj reached her resident to pay her last tributes.     

Elated with Modi government’s move to scrap the special status (Article 370), Swaraj tweeted hailing PM Modi for the feat hours before taking last breath.

"Thank you Prime Minister. Thank you very much. I was waiting to see this day in my lifetime," The former external affairs minister wrote on Twitter. 

Moments after the shocking news broke out, Union Ministers and BJP leaders thronged at AIIMS, Delhi.
