Villagers shame woman over affair, force her to carry lover on shoulders as punishment

They jeer, whistle, clap and mock her. An elderly man dances in the procession. Another man waves a flag. This all-male mob was captured on camera for verbally harassing a woman in Madhya Pradesh’s Jhabua. Her fault? She was having an affair with a an outisde her caste. Angry over her decision, the village decided to teach her a lesson and as form of punishment, they ordered her to carry her lover on her shoulders in the open field. The matter came to light after the video of the incident went viral. According to news agency ANI, which has also tweeted the viral video, the local police has arrested two men following the incident.

 

In the video, the woman believed to be in her 20s, is seen huffing and puffing as she carries her husband on her shoulders. The villagers continue to mock her. The moment she stops to catch her breath, the hurl abuses. This ‘walk of shame’ forced by the village shows the poor state of women in India. 

Last year, a Thomson Reuters report had said that, “India is the most dangerous country in the world to be a woman because of the high risk of sexual violence and slave labour.”  According to the survey, India was also the most dangerous country in the world for cultural traditions that impact women, the survey found, citing acid attacks, female genital mutilation, child marriage and physical abuse. India was the fourth most dangerous country for women in the same survey seven years ago.

A CNN report had said that despite tough laws in post-2012 gangrape scenario,  around 100 sexual assaults are reported to police in the country every day, according to the National Crime Records Bureau, with nearly 39,000 alleged attacks reported in 2016, an increase of 12% from the previous year.
