India on Thursday rejected the United Nations report on alleged human rights violation in Kashmir and termed it “fallacious, tendentious and motivated”.

It is fallacious, tendentious and motivated. We question the intent in bringing out the report. It is a selective compilation of largely unverified information,” ANI quoted the External Affairs Ministry as saying.

The United Nations on Thursday said that India and Pakistan had been using excessive force in both sides of Kashmir and killed many civilians since 2016.

“In responding to demonstrations that started in 2016, Indian security forces used excessive force that led to unlawful killings and a very high number of injuries,” according to the report.

This was the first UN report on human rights in the region. The UN also called for an international level inquiry into the alleged violation of human rights in Kashmir.

In a statement, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein said that the Human Rights Council should investigate the alleged sites of mass graves in Kashmir Valley and Jammu region of India.

The report also accused Indian armed forces of committing heinous crimes like killings of civilians, sexual violence and kidnapping in the Valley.

In the report, the UN also urged Pakistan to use restraint and end its “misuse” of anti-terror legislation to persecute peaceful activists and quash dissent in Kashmir.
