Indigenous Scorpene submarine, Kalvari, delivered to Indian Navy

Shipbuilder Mazgaon Dock Limited handed over first of the six Scorpene-class submarines, Kalvari, to the Indian Navy on Thursday.

The addition of Scorpene-class submarine marks milestone in Indian Navy’s submarine programme as the vessel is expected to bolster India’s maritime prowess.

A senior MDL official said, “History was written with the delivery of the first Scorpene submarine to the Indian Navy.”

The Kalvari is being designed by French naval defence and energy company DCNS. The Mazagaon Dock Limited is building the submarine in Mumbai as part of Project-75 of the Indian Navy.

Mazgaon Dock Limited in a statement said, “The state-of-the-art technology utilised in the Scorpene has ensured superior stealth features such as advanced acoustic silencing techniques, low radiated noise levels, hydro-dramically optimised shape and ability to launch a crippling attack on the enemy using precision guided weapons.”

The Scorpene submarine has been named Kalvari after the deadly deep sea predator of the Indian Ocean the dreaded Tiger Shark.

The second Scorepenes, Khanderi, was launched in January this year. Khanderi is undergoing rigorous sea trials. While, the third Karanj, is being readied for launch by end of this year.
