Numerous supporters of Jallikattu, the bull-taming sport were taken into preventive custody near Madurai on Friday for allegedly trying to defy a ban on the traditional sport associated with Pongal festival.

In order to keep a check, the police was deployed in large number where the sport is generally played like Avaniapuram, Palamedu and Alanganallur, locations famous for Jallikattu in Madurai district.

The step came following indications by various organisations to organise the sport on Pongal. The Apex court on Thursday had said that it could not give its verdict on Jallikattu before Pongal even as political parties cutting across party lines had demanded from the Centre promulgation of an ordinance to allow the sport.

Yesterday, the sport was reportedly held for a few minutes in Karisalkulam village near Madurai. To protest the same, DMK Working President M K Stalin targeted PM Modi on Thursday for allegedly not giving time to AIADMK MPs to discuss the contentious Jallikattu issue.

State police has been taking all preventive steps to ensure maintenance of law and order and compliance of court's ban.
