J&K: Agitated mob thrashes mentally challenged man mistaken for braid chopper

With over 120 braid chopping incidents in about a month, fear as well as anger has gripped Kashmir Valley and now the situation has taken a gruesome turn after a mob mistook a mentally challenged man as a braid chopper and tried to immolate him in Fruit Mandi area of Sopore.

Wasim Ahmad Tantray, a mentally challenged person, suffered grievous injuries after being ruthlessly thrashed by the mob. The mob burnt the grass and threatened him to confess of braid chopping otherwise they would set him on fire.

The video of this barbaric incident with has gone viral on social media.

In another incident, a vigilante group tried to drown a youth into the Dal Lake, who had gone to offer morning prayers at Hazratbal shrine. The police said he was suspected of being a braid chopper.

Fortunately, both were rescued with timely police intervention and the police spokesman said culprits involved in the incident have been identified and would be arrested soon.

Many incidents have been reported of vigilant groups thrashing suspected braid choppers, who later turned out to be innocent.

In one such incident last week, a 70-year-old man died of grievous injuries when he was mistaken as a braid chopper and attacked with a brick by his nephew in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
