Jammu and Kashmir: Encounter breaks out in Pulwama; two jawans injured

Security forces on Monday gunned down two militants, including a Hizbul Mujahideen commander, in an ongoing encounter in Drabgam area of Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district.

The slained militants were identified as Hizbul commander Sameer Tiger and his aide Aaqib Khan. Two Army personnel, including an officer were also injured in the encounter that broke out early on Monday morning.

Following a tip-off about the presence of some militants in Drabgham area by local sources, the Security forces launched a cordon and search operation (CASO). As the forces were closing in during the CASO, the militants opened fire, leaving at least two jawans injured.

“As the cordon was tightened, the militants fired at the security forces triggering the ongoing gunfight,” an Army official said, adding the cordon has been strengthened and an operation to flush out the militants was going on.

One more terrorist was believed to hole up by the Army as the gun battle was still underway.
