A brief exchange of gunfire broke out between security forces and terrorists in the Sopore village of Baramulla district in north Kashmir on Tuesday evening.

After receiving a specific input about the presence of some terrorists, a joint team of army’s 22 RR, CRPF and SOG launched the cordon-and-search operation in Wadoora of Sopore area today morning. After a day long seize, the security forces intensified the searches and fired towards the suspected spot. Also, the holed-up terrorists opened fire at the security forces which led to an encounter.

In the meantime, SSP Sopore Javeed Iqbal confirmed that the contact has been established with the hiding terrorists.

More details awaited.

Earlier, in the day, at least two terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. Arms and ammunition along with two bodies of slain terrorists were recovered from the encounter spot. The identity and the group affiliation of the terrorists are yet to be known.

On June 8, a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist was killed in an encounter with the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district. The terrorist was identified as Iqbal Ahmad. According to the police records, Ahmad was part of a group involved in the planning and execution of a series of terror attacks in the area. Many cases were registered against him.
