11 am

# A sea of humanity swamped the Rajaji Hall grounds with people, cutting across religion, caste and age barriers, pouring in to pay their last respects to their beloved and revered leader J Jayalalithaa, whose body lay in state.

# Amid the pall of gloom, people with teary eyes and crying inconsolably kept streaming into the Rajaji Hall, off the arterial Anna Salai in the heart of the city, to have a final glimpse of 'Amma' (mother as she was fondly called by her followers), who passed away last night.

# All roads leading to the venue were bustling with crowds of people who did not mind taking a long walk with public transport, barring trains, remaining off the roads.

# After Jayalalithaa's body was brought to the Rajaji Hall, the crowd could be seen swelling by the minute and the heavy posse of police personnel deployed there were finding it difficult to control them.

# The emotionally-charged sympathisers, including a large number of wailing women, tried to break the barricade as they surged while nearing the location from where they could have a direct view of their 'Puratchi Thalaivi', draped in her favourite green colour saree, forcing the police to use "mild force" to ensure nothing untoward happened.

# The mourners were being allowed through two queues flanked by iron barricades to pass in front of Jayalalithaa's body, which has been covered by the national tri-colour and placed on the top of the stairs leading to the heritage building.

#
People perched themselves at all vantage points, including the windows, sunshades and gates of the government Super Speciality Hospital, abutting the Rajaji Hall, and private buildings to take a glimpse of Jayalalithaa.

# Men, women, children from different religions could be seen offering their last respects to the departed leader.

9am
# The Centre has declared one-day state mourning across the country in view of the demise of Jayalalithaa and said the national flag will fly at half-mast in all state capitals including Delhi.

# The central government also decided to accord state funeral to the departed leader.

As the casket carrying the body of six-time chief minister was placed on the steps of Rajaji Hall, in the heart of the city off arterial Anna Salai, four Army men covered it with the national Tricolour.

Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and his ministerial colleagues, MPs and MLAs and senior state government officials were among the first to pay homage to Jayalalithaa, who passed away at the Apollo Hospitals here at 11.30 last night after waging a grim battle for life since her hospitalisation on September 22.

Jayalithaa's long time confidante Sasikala Natarajan stood close to the casket. Jayalalithaa's body was first taken to her Poes Garden residence in the early hours and then brought to the Rajaji Hall.

The funeral procession will take place at the Dr MGR Memorial site off Marina beach.

All roads leading to Rajaji Hall grounds were bustling with crowds of people who did not mind taking a long walk with public transport, barring trains, remaining off the roads.

Here's what happened on Monday night

12:30am (Monday)
# Cries of 'Amma, Amma' from hundreds of AIADMK supporters rent the air outside Apollo Hospitals where J Jayalalithaa breathed her last after suffering a massive cardiac arrest.

Chest-thumping and wailing, men and women could not come to terms that their beloved leader was no more as the ambulance carrying the late Chief Minister left the hospital to her Poes Garden residence.

# A cavalcade preceded and followed the ambulance, accompanied by security personnel on its doors to prevent the grief stricken supporters from coming in the way of the vehicle, which inched its way forward.
