Bharatiya Janata Party’s ally in Bihar Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal-United (JD-U) on Sunday slammed Union Minister Giriraj Singh for meeting the accused of Nawada riots in jail.

Hitting out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s minister, senior JD-U leader KC Tyagi after the JDU's national executive meeting in Delhi said that Singh’s meeting with riots accused was not in the accordance with a “healthy democracy”.

Taking strong exception to the BJP leader’s remark that “Hindus are not safe in Bihar”, Tyagi said, “Be it Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Christian, they all are safer in Bihar than any other parts of the country. Such things increase tension in society.”

The BJP leader on Saturday met Nawada riots accused right-wing leaders in Jail. He later met their family members and openly supported them.

"They've always helped maintain peace in all situations. How can you call them rioters? The administration should see if they really incited violence," Singh said after meeting the family members.

He had even accused the Nitish Kumar government of oppressing the Hindus in the name of communal harmony.

"It seems to have been ingrained in the administration and government that there can only be communal harmony if Hindus are oppressed and it is unfortunate. I appeal to the administration and the society that they forget this view," he added.
