Dina Wadia, daughter of Mohammed Ali Jinnah and mother of Bombay Dyeing chairman Nusli Wadia, passed away at the age of 98 in New York on Thursday.
Wadia is survived by her daughter Diana, son Nusli, her grandsons, Ness and Jeh, Jeh’s wife Celina and two great grandchildren, Jah and Ella Wadia.
Dina married Neville Wadia despite a lot of resistance from her father Jinnah. The father-daughter relationship was never the same after the marriage.
Reportedly, Jinnah asked his daughter that there are millions of Muslim boys in India, she could choose any one of them? To which, Dina replied, there are millions of Muslim girls in India, why did you not marry one of them? Jinnah had married a Parsi girl Rattanbai.
After her marriage to Wadia, Dina’s relationship with father was estranged. As per reports, when Jinnah was unwell, Dina wished to visit him in Pakistan. But, she was denied visa by him. She could visit Pakistan only after his father’s funeral.
