J-K: Suspected militants hurl grenade at CRPF, SOG camp in Shopian

Security personnel take position at an encounter site in Kashmir.

A civilian was injured after suspected militants hurled a grenade on the CRPF and SOG camp in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday. Following the attack, security forces launched a major search operation to nab the militants.

The attack came just hours after the forces called off a counter-insurgency operation in Pulwama after some militants managed to flee from the security cordon.

The operation was launched on Tuesday on the basis of a tip-off about the presence of militants, including Lashkar-e-Taiba's Kashmir chief Abu Dujana, in Hakripora area, a police official said.

The militants opened fire during the operation, prompting retaliation from the forces which triggered a gunfight. However, a mob threw stones at the security personnel to disrupt the operation, which allowed the militants to flee, he said.

"Searches were concluded this morning. There was no fresh firing as the militants seemed to have escaped from the cordon last night," the official said.

In a separate incident, a PDP worker was shot at by unidentified gunmen in Srinagar's Barzulla. The injured worker was referred to a hospital for treatment.
