A fortnight after a senior journalist Gauri Lankesh was shot dead in front of house, a TV journalist covering agitation and road blockade by the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) was abducted and killed in Tripura.
The deceased journalist has been identified as Santanu Bhowmick. He was working for Dinrat News in Mandai.
Journalists in large numbers are holding protest outside Tripura chief minister’s residence after the murder of the journalist. The protesting journalist are demanding immediate arrest of all the people involved in the abduction and murder of the scribe.
Abhijit Saptarshi, West district Superintendent of Police (SP) said, “In our initial investigation we have learnt that the journalist was hit from behind and abducted. He was later found with fatal stab injuries.”
The SP added the journalist was rushed to the Agartala Medical College and Hospital for medical treatment but the doctors of the hospital declared him brought dead.
According to the SP situation at Mandai is tense. Over hundreds of activist of the Gana Mukti Parishad (GMP), tribal wing of ruling CPI-M, were injured in a clash with Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura at Chhankhola area of Khowai district.
