Justice Dipak Misra took oath as the 45th Chief Justice of India on Monday. President Ram Nath Kovind presided over the oath taking ceremony. He will occupy the post of CJI for 13 months. 

Justice Dipak Misra, who has succeeded Justice Khehar as the 45th CJI, was all praise for the outgoing judge on his farewell and called him a democratic person with a good heart and a great mind.

"Justice J S Khehar is a man with democratic attitude. He has a good heart, a creation of a good mind which is capable of transmitting good thought and energy.

"He is affectionately energetic and has the ability to energise others because of his contagious vibrance," Justice Misra said.

Justice Misra was elevated to the Supreme Court on October 10, 2011. He is known for heading the bench that dismissed 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon’s plea seeking a stay on his execution, as well as upholding the death sentence given to Nirbhaya’s killers.

Among other notable decisions, was direction given to Delhi Police to upload FIRs on their website within 24 hours of registration so the accused could download them and seek redressal of their grievances.

Justice Misra has also been entrusted the task of heading a three-judge bench to hear a batch of petitions challenging the Allahabad High Court verdict in the Ayodhya land dispute case from August 11.

Misra, who is National Legal Services Authority executive chairman, was the mastermind behind the idea of introducing Legal Assistance Establishments in states to streamline activities to provide free legal aid to the needy.

Justice Dipak Misra enrolled as an advocate on 14th February 1977 and practiced in Constitutional, Civil, Criminal, Revenue, Service and Sales Tax matters in the Orissa High Court and the Service Tribunal.

He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Orissa High Court on 17th January 1996 and transferred to the Madhya Pradesh High Court on 3rd March 1997.

He became permanent Judge on 19th December 1997. Justice Misra assumed charge of the office of Chief Justice, Patna High Court on 23rd December 2009 and charge of the office of the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court on 24th May 2010.
